We still have such deep stigmas around illness and disability—professional stigmas, social stigmas on every level, and so I understand why people choose not to talk about a cancer diagnosis. When I first got sick [in 2010], I kept it basically a secret for almost a year. At first, that felt good to me. But then, to the outside world, he’s Jon Batiste, and you two have become a kind of creative power couple. Does it still sit well with you to have been as open as you were in the book about the ins and outs of your relationship? How does he fit into your story now? Well, he’s always just been Jon to me. He’s never been Jon Batiste, and I think that’s the gift of knowing each other for as long as we have—summer band camp when I was 13 years old and he must have been 14 or 15.
